KELAA REEF REVIVAL

Bringing Life Back to a Forgotten Reef

Coral conservation is at the heart of everything we do at Kelaa. The reefs around our island are home to an incredible world of marine life, and we're committed to protecting them so they thrive for generations to come.

Kelaa Reef Revival brings together two connected projects in development: restoring damaged reef habitat within Kelaa lagoon and developing a small coral nursery to support future restoration work. It's our way of giving a little back to the reef we call home.

Project 1 — Lagoon Reef Revival

We are investigating the use of coral stars and other suitable structures to help stabilise and restore damaged reef areas around surviving coral bommies within Kelaa lagoon.

Project 2 — Coral Rope Nursery

We are developing plans for a small coral rope nursery near the healthy outer-lagoon coral garden, at approximately 10 metres depth, to grow and monitor suitable local coral fragments and support future restoration work.

Kelaa Council has granted permission for these projects. Both projects are in development, with trials and installation subject to site assessment.

Join Us

If you're a student or taking a gap year, we'd love to hear from you about getting involved as these projects develop. It's an opportunity to learn about the reef and experience island life in the Maldives. Hands-on conservation opportunities will depend on project progress and site assessments. For students, we can offer a stay, dive and full board package.
